Dear All

Hope you can help.

I have returned to work on phased return, since being off since December 2009.

I have had Access to work assessment and they have provided Ergonomic Keyboard, and mouse, the mouse has caused a lot of problems and I have suffered this week with a number of bad flare ups. I have had my MXT increased and Pred's Lowered so it could be this aswell, can anybody suggest anything else that could be of help, i work in a call centre typing, using a mouse all day long and talking to customers. Access to work are looking at the report and will get back to me.

Can anybody help.

Thanks Michelle..

Good for you trying to go back to work. I like you type most of the day. I tried an ergonomic keyboard and mouse but found it very difficult to change to. I am a qualified typist and do not need to look at the keyboard so I think this was my biggest problem. As for the mouse I use a gel rest pad so that my wrist is not bent and resting on the desk. I am also waiting for an appointment with Occupational Health and have asked to be measured for some wrist splints. I am not sure I will be able to type with them but it is worth a go.

I must admit since being diagnosed with RA my wrists can become very painful, especially at month end, when the pressure is on. I also find some days are better than others. I keep my anti-inflammatories and pain killers at the maximum level. If you think your Methotrexate should be put back up then speak to your doctor.

Hope you can get something sorted soon.

Jackie

Hello Michelle.

Good for you going back after such a long time. Sorry though I do not have any answer to your
questions.

I to have been offf 7 half months and go back on graded return on Tuesday. Like you had Access
to work 10 days ago and they meant to be getting me ergon key board and separate number keyboard
and a flat mouse (square shape and it like a laptops mouse), plus special pens, and a new chair + + .
I hope I will also be able to manage.

Good luck with answers.

Hi Michelle

Apart from the suggestions above and perhaps using a trackball rather than a mouse (you can then use your palm rather than grip with your fingers), i have found something called mouse-keys to be of help to get the mouse pointer to move around the screen .It takes a little getting used to , but is a good alternative . You turn it on and then use the Number pad to direct the mouse horizontally. vertically and diagonally, and click with the number 5.
I have also learnt a lot of keyboard shortcuts that i never knew existed :O .
Perhaps your Customer Service Software has a lot of shortcuts that you are not aware of , might be worth asking your IT dept about this , as the software supplier should have a list of them somewhere.

The mousekeys option is available on windows 2000, XP, Vista and above ..details Mousekeys on Vista

Here is a layout out which keys are used for which action . Mousekeys layoutYou can also set it up so that when numlock is on the number pad operates as a normal number pad.

All the best
Rich :)

Hi Michelle,

I don't know how your RA affects you but as well as the mouse and keyboard, my employers got me a fabulous new chair that really improves my posture when I'm working. I'm quite short so I got a smaller one (almost made to measure) and sitting properly, apart from helping my neck and shoulders, takes a lot of pressure off my arms and wrists. That was through Access to Work too. I also use a pen called 'Penagain'. If you Google it there are loads of places that sell them.
